The 2024 Hurricane Season is upon us, and for those living in vulnerable areas, it’s not just a time for checking the weather; it’s a time to put our preparation plans into action. While hurricanes are unpredictable, we can take proactive steps to shield our homes and businesses from the worst of their fury. This guide will walk you through smart strategies to protect your property and provide practical advice on what to do if you suffer damage. And remember, if you find yourself in a tough spot, Estevez Services Group is here to lend a helping hand.

Shielding Your Property Before the Storm

Fortify Your Fortress

  • Roof: Think of your roof as your property’s helmet—it needs to be sturdy! Check for loose or damaged shingles and repair them. One loose shingle can cause enough of an opening for water to penetrate and start damage. Hurricane straps can also be a game-changer, adding an extra layer of protection. We recommend you ask a qualified and licensed roofer to assist, especially if you have a steep roof.
  • Windows and Doors: Install impact-resistant windows or storm shutters, if those are not an option, boarding up with plywood can be a lifesaver. Reinforce exterior doors with heavy-duty hardware to withstand high winds.
  • Garage Doors: Your garage door is like your property’’s weak link during a hurricane. Strengthen it with a bracing system or consider upgrading to a more durable model. Research and contact a qualified installer and get an estimate on reinforcing your garage door.

Tidy Up Your Yard

  • Trim and Clear:  Think of this as your property’s pre-game (pre-storm) ritual. Trim back trees and bushes so they don’t become projectiles. It is always recommended to not have large branches near windows or over the roof. Clear gutters and downspouts to keep water flowing where it should.
  • Secure Loose Items:  Store outdoor furniture, grills, and anything else that could become a missile in high winds. The less clutter, the better.

What to Do If the Storm Hits

Prioritize Safety

  • Assess Wisely:  Before stepping into your home or business, check for hazards like broken glass, structural problems, gas leaks or electrical issues. If you suspect danger, call emergency services. Safety first, always!
  • Document Everything:  We have been in the claims process with many businesses and homeowners.  We encourage you to take pre and post storm photos and/or videos of your property, especially of any visible damage. This is invaluable for your insurance claim. This is your visual proof that will help with the claims process. Even if you do not expect to make a claim, or not sure if something is damaged – it is a good idea to document your property anyway.

Notify Your Insurance Company

  • Report the Damage:  Contact your insurance provider as soon as you are able to do so. Provide them with any documentation you gathered. It’s a crucial step to getting your claim moving.
  • Stay in Touch:  Keep the lines of communication open with your insurance adjuster to ensure your claim is handled smoothly. Do not be surprised if the field adjuster is a contracted inspector/adjuster who may never be involved with your claim – this is common and standard practice for insurance companies. The “desk” adjuster usually remains with you throughout the claims process, but they too may be switched at some point. The important thing is to keep your own records of all communications and take notes, names and a timeline on your end – do not assume the insurance company will maintain tidy records and keep your best interest as a priority.
  • Note: Estevez Services Group works with many of the top-tiered and subsidized insurance carriers, and although we see most claims go well, there are plenty that get lost in the shuffle and often it is the homeowner or business owner who suffers when good records and documentation are not available in the claims process.

Begin the Cleanup and Repair Process

  • Water Removal:  Start removing standing water to prevent mold and further damage. Use pumps, buckets, or mops—whatever you’ve got on hand. We are here to help with this process if you need us! Call 844-352-8453 to be routed to a specialist who can help.
  • Combat Mold:  Dry out your property as soon as possible. Dehumidifiers and fans are your best friends here. Open windows and let the flow of air help you mitigate some of the damage caused by moisture. Let the experts help! Contact us for referral to licensed remediators who can come assess and start the process of sanitizing your home or business.
  • Make Temporary Fixes:  If you can safely manage it, start with temporary repairs to prevent further damage—like covering broken windows with plywood, plastic sheeting or tarps. As always, we are here to help with these emergency repairs.
